Hand Stand

It seems like only yesterday we we’re doing this the other way up. Frankly though it about time we stepped up a notch and got down to some really good positions. We’ve covered the basics; you can operate in society, but let’s get more adventurous shall we?

Don’t be concerned, I’m not taking us too far in one step. This is a position used by many young humans. It’s child’s play really.
I do recommend however that you find a good solid wall, that’ll allow scuff marks, to begin your training. It may take some time to reach Lozenge’s standard.
Various schools of thought reign in this area. Some prefer to begin face down, flat on the floor. They then walk backwards with both their feet up the wall and their hands across the floor toward the wall. Eventually, with perhaps some wobbling this will place you vertically upside-down, on outstretched arms. It is up to you how you release your legs and feet from the wall toward the achievement of self suspension. Do take care as you are learning, as pushing off too hard can cause you to land harshly on your back. I do advise putting make shift padding about the floor during early attempts.
Others enter the Hand Stand position in a more acrobatic fashion, and this is certainly a method you should aspire to. They begin standing, and perhaps with a little rocking back and forth, they launch themselves downward with their hands to the floor. With this force behind them, upon their hands making contact with the floor, they transfer their body weight. Pushing off with their feet they finally assume the position, only practice and a good knowledge of your own body weight will tell you how hard to push off at that point. Again, a wall may be a good idea, to help you in the early stages.
Before we finish, a quick nod to health and safety. Don’t do this for extended periods of time, your body is actually kind of used to being the other way up. It tends to go a bit weird on you if you over do the upside down thing. You’ll know when this is happening, have no fear, it wears off.
Eventually, you will be able to assume this position freely and un-supported. When this happens, you will surely be very proud. It is truly life affirming stuff.
